What is a cookie?
A cookie is a small text file that stores web preferences. Almost every website uses this technology. Cookies are downloaded when your web browser visits a website for the first time. The next time you use the same device to view that website, the cookie and the corresponding stored information are transmitted to the website you have viewed (own cookie) or to another website to which the cookie belongs (third-party cookie). This allows the website to recognise that you have already viewed the website with that browser and, in many cases, to adapt the content displayed.
Some cookies are extremely useful because they can improve the user experience when you revisit a website that you have visited several times. For example, cookies remember your interests, tell you how you use a particular website, and tailor the offers shown to your personal interests and needs, provided you are using the same end device and browser as before. Most of the cookies we use are automatically deleted from your hard drive when you finish browsing (so-called “session cookies”). However, we also use cookies that remain on your hard drive even after your browsing session has ended. This improves the user experience when you revisit the website by adapting the website to your personal needs and optimises the page loading time.
